Like so many of Obama’s cabinet picks, his pick for Attorney General, Eric Holder, indicates he won’t be sticking to his campaign promises. In this case his promise to respect our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.
Eric Holder is an extreme gun control advocate. So extreme, he actually supported the Washington DC gun law that banned residents from keeping any kind of fire arm in their homes for self defense, or any other purpose. He will surely have no problem with a bill currently in Congress that would make any semi-automatic rifles, handguns, or shotguns that are used by law enforcement illegal for the American people to own. They should be banned, according to liberals, because they are not suitable for sporting purposes. It doesn’t even have to be the exact same kind of gun. The Attorney General can decide that a gun is similar enough to a type of weapon used by law enforcement to make it worthy of being banned for the general public. That means my Glock .40 S&W could be deemed illegal just because some law enforcement agencies have their officers use them in the line of duty. Actually, several of my home defense weapons, and guns I use for recreational shooting could become illegal.
Not only is this unconstitutional, it’s moronic. Haven’t we been hearing for years from law enforcement and some politicians that the criminals have the police outgunned with better more high power guns? I guess Congress would have us protect our families from the crook who comes in our house with a sawed off shotgun by using squirt guns, or perhaps diplomacy.
It also serves no purpose other than to gain ground toward an unarmed public, which is their ultimate goal. You don’t stop gun crimes by going after innocent gun owners. You go after the criminals. It’s also been proven in studies of crime statistics that gun ownership among the population cuts down on crime. Banning guns in peoples homes is the equivalent of declaring open season for burglars and criminals. If they think they might actually get shot for threatening someone with a gun or robbing someone, naturally, they will be less likely to perpetrate a crime. If their dumb enough to try it anyway, they’ll likely be less successful in their attempt, and it’ll probably mean one less violent criminal on the streets. It’s common sense. Liberals are a little short on that, though.
The only hope Republicans have of stopping this bill in the new 111th Congress is to hold the bill in committee and hope it dies a slow death – something the Democrats have been masters at doing (think Bolton, or Bush’s judicial nominations), but Republicans have historically been too weak willed to fight those kind of battles. If we want laws like these kept off the books, and our gun rights protected, we all need to contact our Senators and express our extreme displeasure. If our voice is loud enough, maybe they’ll listen. It’s the Republicans only hope of regaining power. The message that should have been sent by the last election is that Conservative Americans are tired of Rinos who don’t listen to the will of their constituents.
