Bush: Pullout will be good for Israel

Filed under: — Jennifer Rast @ 5:35 pm

President Bush’s comments today on the disengagement displayed both his ignorance of the situation on the ground in Israel, and his willingness to treat terrorism inflicted on Jews as a lesser evil than terrorism suffered by Americans or any other country.

Bush offered as evidence that the disengagement is the best hope for peace a dramatic decline in violence and death since the Gaza pullout plan began being implemented. There’s just one problem with this rationalization Mr. President. In reality (not the one you choose to create when speaking on the topic of Palestinian terrorism), July marks an 18 month high in Palestinian terrorist attacks on Israel!

While I applaud President Bush for at least mentioning that there was an “intifada, killing, and death” in the Middle East before this fictional decrease in violence, I wonder if he noticed at all who was doing most of the dieing and who was waging the Jihad? Depicting the situation in the Middle East in general terms without naming names is his way of spreading the blame. It makes his weird reality, where the Palestinians say “thank you” and spontaneously form a Democracy, seem possible. I wonder if he realizes he’s handing a port of entry into the Middle East and the land for a new terror base over to the friends of our worst enemy. Al Qaida needed a new home, and they got one.

On the eve of disengagement, one of the most traumatic episodes Israeli society has ever faced, US President George W. Bush tried to assure the country Thursday that it was doing the right thing.

“Disengagement is I think a part of making Israel more secure and peaceful,” Bush said in a Channel 1 interview from his ranch in Crawford, Texas. “I believe that the decision the prime minister has made and will follow through on will be good for Israel.”

[..]Bush said that he understood that Israelis were concerned that disengagement would create a “vacuum into which terrorism will flow.” However, he said, “I happen to disagree, I think this will create an opportunity for democracy to emerge, and democracies are peaceful.”

Bush said that the US, “as an active participant in this process,” would encourage the formation of Palestinian security forces to fight terror, “just like the road map calls for.” (Riiiight, he rejects the rest of the worlds reality and substitutes his own. – Scriptorium ed.)

Asked why he was so confident that the plan would enhance security, Bush said, “First of all the previous system wasn’t’ working – there was an intifada, there was death, there was killing. If you notice there has been a calm in attacks. One attack is too many, but there have been fewer attacks.”

Bush said that in the long run the ultimate solution for Israel’s security was “two states living side by side in peace.” In the meantime, he said, “we have to work to dismantle terrorist organizations, and that is precisely what the roadmap calls for.” (and that’s precisely what never actually happens – .ed). . . .
